The gift he placed into my hand

with gentle touch,

with lowered eyes

and blushed cheeks -

I knew it very well,

it was a stolen thing.

And yet, he was no thief,

that honest man who stole for me a peony as a gift.

Thrilled and delighted,

my fingertips caressed the perfect velvet petals

That stole from far above

the crimson brightness of the sun

To match the splendid passion of our youth in love.
